WOM Guides: 5 Super Ways To Stop The Frustration and Revise More Effectively

Written by Diana Serenli & Kevin Le:

Finding the right revision technique is not always easy. It can be frustrating… very frustrating.

We all learn at a different level, pace and way to each other.

Teachers might give you great revision techniques but sometimes they’re just not the ones we need.

They are not the ones that work. You try and try but nothing seems to stay. It goes in one ear and leaves the other.

If there was just a way to have all that specific information stuck in our heads. How great would that be?

Well now I’m not saying that mind maps and revision cards are bad… I’m just saying that we need something new and refreshing.

If you get bored easily while revising then the outcome will be nothing. Just wasted time and energy. The human brain won’t absorb if it’s not being entertained at least.

Here are five new interesting revision tips that will knock the socks off any revision techniques that you  might not have previously been introduced to. They might just make that big difference.

1 – Apps and Active Revision:

This might be something you might have considered doing , however the limited amount of  free space in your mobile device is just not letting it happen!

However, some revision apps have proven to help you retain over 70% more information. All made possible by something called ‘active revision/ revision on the move’.

Many revision apps on the market have perfected this and as a result they will help you get that A*.

There are apps like the appropriately named “revision app” which supports students with revison on the move with over 1 million revision notes, flash cards and quizzes covering everything from GCSE, A-Level and University subjects.

The app allows students to create their own flash revision cards with video, text or audio which can be saved for future revision sessions and sent to friends to support group studies.

Or if you want to completely destroy that essay for your course work check out ‘ Vocabulary builder and the newly established Grammarly. Believe me when I say these apps will allow you write like a English PHD student.

And if you was brave enough to pick a modern foreign language to study there is an app called ‘Quizlet‘ where you can clean up on your languages such as French, Spanish etc.

We live in an era where we need to utilize technology to work smartly and efficiently, so using educational apps are the first step.

These are available every, from your PC/Laptop to your mobile device. This allows subliminal revision as the notifications will always appear up on your phone when you check it, or whenever you hear a notification it gives you a revision question.

Passive revision is a very effective method previously used by sticking flash cards or revision information in the toilet, or on the wall of your bedroom, but using it in conjunction with your smart devices makes it a smart use of your time and devices.

2 – Vocal/Sound Revision

If you love listening to music in your free time or even when you’re working out then why don’t you study at the same time!

You could even make a song of your subject and listen to it if you adore music that much. There is a reason why you are able to remember every single world of that significantly addictive ‘Work‘ song by Rhianna.

Audio books are widely available all over the internet. If you’re listening to information without realizing, you can draw information from your subliminal mind and insert it into your exam to get that A* you aspire to achieve.

This makes the revision enjoyable and a casual means of revision. Also by turning it into a song with a catchy hook, means you’ll learn it quicker and easier.

3 – Teach it

This method is seriously one of the most effective yet underrated ways to revise.

If you are person who struggles to know where to start with revision this method is definitely you!

Get the information into your head is by getting the same information somebody else’s.

If you are able to explain a something to someone else easily and they actually understand it… you are basically reinforcing information you may not be 100% sure about.

You also engage more of your brain power if you attempt to make someone else understand material that you do.

You can accurately and easily see where the gaps are in your knowledge, therefore allowing to know exactly what your weaknesses are and what to focus your revision on.

Teach your parents, friends, siblings, the less the person knows about the topic or subject, the larger the effect becomes.

As I said, teaching can prove to be one of the best methods for revision. It is very social and indirect so your brain absorbs information more easily as it doesn’t necessarily see it as work.

4 – Arrow Theory:

This method will change the game.

When you see an arrow, you instinctively follow it. Right? It feels natural to after all

Use this human instinct in relation with a mind map or bullet point list to provide some visual aid for progression.

Told you… it is called the game changer for a reason

An example of a mind map using the arrow theory

This can also work with a timeline for history, a life-cycle for biology and can literally be applied into any subject.

Making graphic and visually appealing aids can trigger neurological links in your brain to deepen your subject knowledge and make you able to remember a lot more information right before that all important exam date.

5 – Timetables:

” A man who has full control of his own time. Has the power to change his wholelife over the course of a day”

Time management.

Two words that will have an astounding impact on your life. I ca not  stress how important time management is.

How can you be strictly organized if you don’t set out a timetable? Timetables set mental reminders and pre-sets your mindset before you even begin to revise.

If you tell your brain “I’m going to revise maths for 1 hour at 1PM” then your brain will subconsciously work and shift to a mindset where you are able to efficiently revise.

So how do you create a good timetable?:

Well there are various ways to create timetables, however there is a reason why majority do not work in terms of consistency.

Normal timetables prose you “schedule your priorities” where as effective timetables should cause you to ” prioritise your schedule” .

Timetables like those help you organise your whole life. You feel in control and you are able to achieve so much more.

From cracking on to that revision at 7pm to linking up with Tom down at the pub at  9pm. An effective timetable will allow you to do it all.

If you are interested in knowing how to create one of these effective timetables and saying good bye to procrastination. An article is being written right this second, that’s right while you are reading this very sentence.

It will be released sooner than you think and the link will be placed here! ( Subscribers will get it early )

Well what are you waiting for… crack on with the revision:

Ensure you utilize every one of these methods to help you revise.

These methods have been tried and tested by members of the WOM team and at least one of them will appeal to you. This is out worth of revision, whats yours?
